Wednesday night, shouting students filled the lawn between the Spartan Complex and the Event Center in a set of competitions called the Greek Olympics as part of Greek Week.

Fraternities and sororities combined to form teams represented by the colors orange, black, blue, green and red.

In support for their teams students chanted "You wish you were a tangerine," "Once you go black you never go back" and "Blue - you know."

"It is a great way to show spirit at SJSU," said Jeannie Sabaroff, the assistant director for fraternity and sorority life.

Student made chariots that were dragged by teammates in the annual chariot race that kicked off the event.

The orange team won the chariot race dragging what resembled a snow sled with wheels to victory, beating the red team by a small margin.

The chariot race was once part of the halftime show at the Homecoming football game.

"We wanted more of a community feel," Sabaroff said. "It really brings the community and the fraternities together."

She added that the event was open for everyone to watch.

The second event was a relay race that involved first spinning in a circle then running while trying not to tumble due to dizziness. The second leg of the race was a wheelbarrow sprint, where one student gripped the legs of another as they walked with their hands. A can of soda was chugged before tagging another teammate for a sprint to the finish.

The orange team was again victorious.

"Team tangerine is going to take it all the way," said a member of the orange team.

Dodgeball was the next event and started with the orange team going head-to-head with the red team, which again failed to defeat the orange team. The orange team eventually fell for the first time of the night to the black team.

In the spirit of competitive eater and SJSU alumnus Joey Chestnut, part of the Greek Olympic competition included a hot dog-eating contest.

Competitors ate furiously, but were short of Chestnut's record-breaking pace.

The blue team won in a tough battle against the orange team.

More competitions will take place over the remainder of the week to finish off the Greek Week competitions.

"It was fun to be around everyone," said John Anin, a freshman graphic design major and a pledge for fraternity Delta Upsilon. "The competition is unbelievable."
