The SJSU women's gymnastics team tallied another victory Friday evening at Sacramento State, edging the Hornets by .05 points.

"We cut it too close," said head coach Wayne Wright of the Spartan's win. "I was nervous about the scoring because we knew it was going to be very close."

The final score ended up in the Spartans favor 192.800-192.750.

"I think that the team did wonderful," Wright said. "It was a team effort. We never gave up and stuck with the game plan."

The Spartans placed first in three of the five events.

Senior Raylyn Cardeno took first place on the vault, and senior Leah Bigelow won for her performance on the balance beam.

Junior co-captain Veronica Porte tied for first place with Sacramento State's Marina Borisova for the floor, scoring a 9.775.

"Both teams are really good, and neither of us could afford to make mistakes," Wright said.

The meet was very intense, and both the Spartans and the Hornets were equal in each event.

"We were really evenly matched," Porte said. "We had some falls that we had to count, but everyone did a great job."

Wright said that he was very proud of the girls who did well with their events, but was also happy to have some of the other girls step up in their performances.

"Casey Jay is a senior and she didn't win the floor event, but it was her first time competing," Wright said. "She gave us a 9.725, which is equivalent to a second place score. I am very proud and was happy for her to accomplish that."

The win gives the Spartans a 5-0 record this season.

Wright said he is extremely content with how the Spartans have been doing this season so far, especially since a pre-conference poll predicted that SJSU would finish in last place.

The Spartan's next meet will be at home Feb. 1, where they will face Sacramento State and Wisconsin-Stout. The meet begins at 7 p.m. at the Spartan Gym.

It was so great to have Casey Jay back in the line-up. She actually competed both vault and floor as a freshman and has been hampered by injuries during the past two years. (Continued…)
