In the second game of conference play the SJSU men's basketball game lost the game in the final seconds for the second time in a row, this time 75-73 against the New State Aggies. Adrian Oliver had a chance to send the game to overtime with a long jumper at the buzzer, but he failed to connect.
The Spartans started conference play with a 66-61 loss against Louisiana Tech on Saturday at the event Center. Early on no team could score consistently with both teams going on a number of scoring droughts and Streaks in the first half. The Spartans started the game on a 6-1 run with forward C.
The Spartans woman's basketball team lost to their cross-town rival Santa Clara University 56-39 on Saturday. Both teams went into the game with one-win records and not winning since Nov. 28. "It seems like when the lights come on we don't show up," said Spartan head coach Pam DeCosta, "and a lot of that has to do with our leadership on the floor.

SJSU and the city of San Jose are drafting a plan for the development of the university's South Campus and its surrounding areas. Since last year, the university and the city have considered creating more athletic fields, which is one of the land-use ideas for South Campus, said Tony Valenzuela, associate vice president of Facilities, Development and Operations. A new commuter check program implemented last semester allows staff and faculty to deduct stipends from their paychecks to use toward select Bay Area mass transit systems, said Andy Chow, A.S. Transportation Solutions commute specialist coordinator. The Parking, Traffic and Transit Advisory Committee created the program, the "SJSU Pre-Tax Public Transportation Deduction Plan," Chow said. Access to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library system Web site remains unavailable because of a network power failure this past Sunday. According to a news release, library users are unable to access the library Web site, as well as the catalog, databases and other online resources. (0) comments
SJSU's Poets and Writers Coalition, the university's first student-run writing community, will publicly perform "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg. Today 10 students, faculty members and poets will come together to perform this poem - originally banned in 1957 for its obscenity - in its entirety, completely uncensored. (0) comments
The graduate studies and research department recently issued its guidelines for the annual CSU Research Award. According to Pamela Stacks, associate vice president of the department, this award is "supported by funds that are allocated from the Chancellor's Office to each CSU campus. (0) comments
"Bastard Out of Carolina" author Dorothy Allison will be speaking on campus at two free events today, one at 3 p.m. in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, and the second at 7:30 p.m. in the Music building Concert Hall.
