Issue date: 5/10/07 Section: Entertainment
Comedian Pablo Francisco returns to the San Jose Improv today for a live show that continues through Sunday. Known not only for his comedy, Francisco also specializes in sound effects and impressions. He has made appearances on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," "Mad TV" and "The Family Guy." Francisco recorded his last DVD from a live show in San Jose and talked with the Spartan Daily earlier this week about his visit:
Q: How did you get started doing comedy?
A: I started in Tucson, Ariz., working at Dominos Pizza. One day before I got fired I was delivering pizzas to a comedy club. When the manager went to give me the money I was just watching the comedians and I thought, 'You know what? I can probably do this on amateur night.' So that is basically how it started.
Q: How long have you been doing comedy?
A: About 18 years now.
Q: Do you prefer to do live shows or TV and videos?
A: Standup, live recorded to DVD. Because basically the audience can come see the show, buy the show and kick back and relax and watch it any time they want to. So basically I have a TV following without being on TV. So it is a good thing for me.
Q: What was your most memorable show?
A: Opening up for Carlos Mancia at a big theater in San Francisco. It was probably the most memorable because he walked up and said, 'I am going to crush as soon as I walk up on stage.' And he did. That was probably one of the biggest moments of my life, just being on the same stage as him.
Q: Your latest DVD, "Ouch," was recorded here in San Jose.
A: Absolutely, it was recorded in San Jose and it has been out for about eight months right now and you can get it on Amazon or on PabloFrancisco.com. It's going international in July. It is going to be rockin' and rollin'.
Q: Are you excited to come back to the Improv in San Jose?
A: San Jose is probably one of the best crowds on the planet. People there go there for a good time and that is what it is all about. Those people have nothing to do but just have a good time, not judge anybody else, go to the Improv. It's just eat, drink and laugh.
