Chuck D 'brings the noise' to SJSU

Knowing the straight facts of history in order to proceed into the future as educated adults was the message Public Enemy founder Chuck D gave to students Thursday night at Morris Dailey Auditorium as part of Legacy Week. Chuck D and fellow keynote speaker Kevin Witherspoon, an assistant professor of history at Lander University, focused their speeches on the protest of Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Summer Olympics. Last Thursday was Bike to School Day, an event set up by the SJSU Environmental Resource Center. An information booth was set up near the Student Union Amphitheater with the intention of encouraging students and faculty to ride bikes to school, said Alan Hackler. (1) comment

SJSU community remembers Olympics salute

About 300 people gathered on Tower Lawn on Thursday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Tommie Smith and John Carlos' black power salute after they won gold and bronze medals respectively in the 200-meter dash at the 1968 Summer Olympics. "I think what they said opened the gates for humanity," said Ethel Walker, the interim chair of the department of television, radio, film and theatre. (0) comments

At SJSU's International House on Friday, 11 teams competed for the prestige of winning the International Quiz, but on this occasion, it really was the taking part that counted. The event, now in its fifth year, is held every semester and brings together many of SJSU's international community. (0) comments

The SJSU Career Center hosted its Fall Job and Internship Fair on Thursday, and potential employees from the 157 booths provided tips for students on the do's and don'ts when it comes to resumes, first impressions and "buzz" words they like to hear from you when it comes to landing that job you want after college. Legacy Week wrapped up with an intimate event at Blake's Steakhouse and Bar in San Pedro Square on Friday night, as a crowd of about 50 people celebrated the weeklong series of events to commemorate activism at San Jose State over the years. Guests were given the opportunity to meet community leaders such as Councilman Sam Liccardo and guest of honor Tommie Smith. (0) comments
