The Barrett Ballroom at the Student Union was packed with an estimated 640 people waiting to hear Ishmael Beah, author of "A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier," speak of his experiences as a child soldier in Sierra Leone.

Beah found himself consumed in the middle of a civil war in Sierra Leone when the rebel army, Revolutionary United Front (RUF), raided his hometown in the southern part of the West African country in 1993.

Running from the rebel army for a year, Beah was picked up by the government army and forced into an unfathomable world as a child soldier at the age of 13. (0) comments

Spring officially starts March 20, but it didn't look like winter at SJSU this weekend. "I'm tired of rain. Rain makes you down. Rain can depress you," said Portia Hardin, a freshman hospitality major, lamenting that spring wasn't actually here yet. (0) comments

This year's Mardi Gras celebration was without incident for the University Police Department.

No campus related crime was reported Tuesday, said Sgt. John Laws, UPD public information officer.

About two years ago, a group of SJSU students stopped organizing blood drives on campus for the same reason President Don Kassing imposed the ban last week.

"They decided it was discriminatory," said Melinda Chu-Yang, coordinator of peer health education. (0) comments
