Students try to keep it cool on hot days

Last week's high temperatures forced students to find ways to combat the heat. Suzy Fernandez, a sophomore majoring in child and adolescent development, said that she prefers to stay inside the Student Union or the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library to avoid the hot weather. (0) comments

A professor at San Jose State University no longer conducts his writing class because he said a student's story that fictionalized the killing of a professor, "had created an atmosphere of conflict in the classroom which would make learning difficult." Mitch Berman, the professor for Writing Fiction, an English course at SJSU, said in an e-mail that the story, which was written before the Virginia Tech University shooting, had "created a great deal of anxiety," and several of his students wrote to him after the shooting, questioning "their own safety in the classroom. Campus hit with blackout

Power outage lasts only 6 minutes

A campuswide blackout hit San Jose State University yesterday afternoon interrupting classes and forcing thousands of students to evacuate buildings and fill campus walkways in wait. Jeff Richardson, assistant chief engineer for the Facilities Development and Operations Central Plant at SJSU, said he wasn't quite sure why the power went out but said it had something to do with what he described as a "fault transfer on transformer two. Permit process to be revised

Student event spurred decision for change

In response to complaints surrounding a Students for Change event held during Palestine Awareness Week, the Student Union is looking into revising its process for granting student event permits, said Terry Gregory, associate director of the Student Union. According to Sarah Morris, the president of Students for Change, the group is trying to bring awareness to social injustice all over the world, but its focus has recently been on Palestine. Omid Kordestani, senior vice president of global sales and development of Google Inc., will be speaking at San Jose State University's 150th commencement ceremony on May 26. Kordestani, a SJSU alumnus who graduated from the university in 1984 with a B.S. in electrical engineering, will give guidance to an approximate crowd of 5,100 undergraduate students and 2,620 graduate students, according to a press release by the university. Barbara Conry, who acted as dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts since former dean Inger Sagatun-Edwards became ill, was appointed interim dean on May 8 by San Jose State University Provost Carmen Sigler. According to a memo Sigler sent to the campus community, Conry was unanimously recommended by chairs and directors in CASA, President Don Kassing and the executive committee of the Academic Senate to fill in for Sagatun-Edwards, who died from pancreatic cancer on April 2. Spartan Daily names new executives for fall

The semester is almost over, but Sara Spivey and Shelby Jones are already excited about the fall. In August, Spivey, a junior majoring in journalism, will take the reins of the Spartan Daily as executive editor while Jones, a junior majoring in advertising, will ascend to the position of advertising director. School is almost out for summer, and the next heat wave of technology gadgets and video games are ready to empty out the pockets of potential buyers. Josh Enany, a sales specialist at the Best Buy on Almaden Expressway said the store is in for a busy summer with HDTV prices going down and the June release of Apple's iPhone. (1) comment

The end of the spring semester for San Jose State University is here and students who are looking to knock down a few extra units during summer session can expect to pay a decent amount out of their pocket. "I never expected the price of enrollment to ever go down because it's always been expensive," said Carolyn Tran, a senior majoring in sociology. (0) comments

The San Jose State University Research Foundation will hold a health fair on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for people whose busy schedules may get in the way of their wellbeing, said human resources associate director, Steve Barranti. "A lot of frustrations from the day flow into the home," said Cheree Aguilar, director of human resources for the foundation, "and most folks don't have the opportunity to become more informed about health. On May 4 Connie L. Lurie's donation of $10 million to San Jose State University's College of Education was announced during the Founder's Day celebration. Lurie said her donation is going to positively affect the faculty, and in turn, positively affect the students. (0) comments

Every year the Center for Service Learning recognizes students, faculty and community groups who have demonstrated excellence in service learning with the annual Provost's Awards. This was the sixth year that the Provost's Awards has honored the community of San Jose State University. (1) comment
