Vigil held for Virginia Tech students

A crowd of about 50 people met in front of Clark Hall Thursday for a Black Student Union-sponsored event to remember, through discussion, song and prayer, the 33 people who died in last Monday's massacre at Virginia Tech University.

The discussion emphasized community building and unity, and several speakers expressed sympathy for not only the 32 innocent students and teachers who were murdered, but also the killer, Cho Seung-Hui.

Day of Service

Having one arm in a sling didn't stop Eric Groza from showing up to help work during San Jose State University's first Day of Service on Friday.

"I just broke my wrist last night," Groza said, "but I am still here."

"This arm," he said while raising his left hand, "is still good and I'm ready to go.

There will be no new stadium for San Jose State University football and Major League Soccer, the university announced on Thursday. The news comes after months of negotiations between university President Don Kassing and developer Lew Wolff fell through. Larry Carr, the associate vice president for government and community relations, said that the deal did not work because Kassing and Wolff were unable to agree on the way revenue from the new facility would be shared. Six members of Delta Upsilon fraternity bantered with one another as they toted orange trash bags along a dirt path that flanks two grass recreation fields at Olinder Park in San Jose. The San Jose State University students had been gathering litter and clearing brush for most of the morning, but in their momentary state of chitchat, they neglected to see a single, clear plastic cup, slightly crushed and laying in the path in front of them.
