After months of negotiations, plans for a new combined Major League Soccer / San Jose State University football stadium have fallen through.

Larry Carr, the associate vice president for government and media relations said today that President Don Kassing and developer Lew Wolff realized today that the stadium plan was not going to work.

"They agreed this afternoon that they are not going to reach a deal that was going to work," Carr said.

The weekend should be cloudy in San Jose, according to the San Jose State University meteorology department, which compiled its information on April 19 from the National Weather Service. More than 900 San Jose State University students, staff and faculty members have signed up to spend their Friday painting houses, picking up trash and cleaning creek beds. The 2,200 residents of Ngelenge, Tanzania in Africa, in dire need of a water supply, shared one hand-pumped well as their only source for dirty and unsafe drinking water. A group called Engineers Without Borders believes that determining the specific needs, economic situations and cultural attributes of "disadvantaged communities," such as the one in Ngelenge, is the best way to help, said Francis Doumet, a leader of the Appropriate Technology Design Team for a San Francisco based professional chapter of the group. In celebration of sustainability week, San Jose State University students and faculty have been looking at new environmentally friendly technologies. "Sustainable energy would be an energy that is carbon neutral, does not release emissions into the atmosphere and meets the energy demand of our society," said Asim Zia, assistant professor in the environmental studies department Zia said that there have been advancements in making renewable energy technology more efficient, cheaper to produce and usable in everyday life. With countries around the world like Iran still denying that the Holocaust ever happened, a panel of San Jose State University professors discussed the reasons behind the denial of the Holocaust and other genocide dismissals. Jonathan Roth, chair of the SJSU history department, Richard Keady, a comparative religions professor, Allen Leventhal, an anthropology professor, along with panel moderator, Victoria Harrison, the coordinator of SJSU's Jewish studies, discussed what genocide meant and why countries continue to deny that genocide happened. Environmentalist honored

A yellow and black butterfly hovered above the California Bay Laurel, freshly planted on the grass behind Yoshihiro Uchida Hall in honor of San Jose State University's alumnus Gaylord Nelson -- the founder of Earth Day.

"Gaylord Nelson would be really excited about the rising environmental concern on campus," said Lynne Trulio, a professor of environmental studies.

If a variety of clubs from San Jose State University's campus hope to win $1,000 tonight, they're going to have to eat, run and guess their way to the grand prize in the inaugural "Battle of the Clubs" competition. Student-run Christian group Unity in Christ will be facilitating "Battle of the Clubs," an event pitting various on-campus organizations against one another in challenges involving general knowledge, school trivia, athletic ability and appetite, Unity in Christ spokesperson Robby Valderrama said.
