Thousands march against school budget cuts

Abstract:
SACRAMENTO - Monday was supposed to have been lobby day for the California State Student Association. Instead it brought in about 3,000 raucous reinforcements to help prove a point to legislators in the state Capitol.

Students from the California State University, the University of California and state community colleges turned out to march down the Capitol Mall in protest of $1 billion in cuts to higher education in the state and $4 billion in cuts to all education.

SJSU Associated Students President Benjamin Henderson, who proposed last summer the idea of the march to the state student association, said he was satisfied with the results....

I am a student from the Philipps university in Marburg (Germany). We have been struggling against the introduction of tuition fees and the commercialisation of education (as part of the Bologna Process) in the past few years as well. Ten of thousands protested, blocked highways, city centres, railway stations and university buildings.

Some students from Germany, Greece and France are trying to organize a europeanwide or at least international strike. They want to start with three or four universities from different countries in Europe and then hope that other universities will follow.

It is really great to see that students in Spain are fighting against the Bologna process as well. In 2007 students protested in over 30 countries all over the world: http://fading-hope.blog-city.com/international_student_protests_2007.htm

We need to coordinate protests internationally to increase our pressure.

There are various ways of getting connected internationally. For example there is a group on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=24722765003

We need to exchange more information and let students across the world know, that students in many countries are protesting!!

In Solidarity~

I am a student at Jerome Mack Middle School, although I am only in the eighth grade I am really involvedd in community and environmental issues. The government took over $350,000 dollars out of our schools budget. Now they are threatening to take away our performing arts programs. My friends and I decided to start a petition, but the district said we couldn't do anything about it. We all decided to protest. Five of my friends got arressted and two had to go to court. Don't we have a freedom of speech? Shouldn't we have a say in what we get to learn at school? Things need a CHANGE hopefully our next presidinent can give us one.
