'Fighting Insanity'
Making a deadly situation worse

Abstract:
Luckily for my dad - and my whole family - a blood transfusion helped save his life.

Unfortunately, the next person who needs blood might not be so lucky. Hospitals have a constant need for more blood donations than they are currently getting.

There is almost never enough blood, and our university has made a deadly situation even worse....

I appreciate your well thought out and clearly articulated editorial. I, too, was stunned to read President Kassing's email, but in the past few days I have thought about it a lot and I have hopes that there will be more positive outcome than negative.

If this publicity gets the FDA to change it's rules, there will be more potential donors - Hooray!

If people from this campus follow your wonderful suggestion and protest this move by going out and donating off campus - Hooray!

If people like you continue to write informative articles, we all keep thinking about it and we all win - Hooray!

Yes, I will be inconvenienced if I have to go to a donor center instead of donating here on campus, but for the greater good, I urge everyone who can, to take the time to join me!

I too agree that Blood donation on campus should not be stopped just due to differences in policies.I guess there must be some other better way for President Kassing to condemn FDA policy and force FDA to re-evaluate its years old rules and regulations about eligibility to donate blood. But, a policy(maybe for protest) by President Kassing which can keep many people away from necessary blood does not sound really logical.

I am upset about this too. Thanks for the article. I think there are better ways to make a political statement without threatening the health of this important institution.

I agree, this issue was handled incorrectly and needs to be revisited.

Well, Pres. Don Kassing wanted to leave SJSU with a bang; he just created that bang.
